Therapy with Horses

Therapy with Horses ●

Equine-Assisted Therapy & Mindfulness Retreats

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is a specialized therapy that integrates horses into sessions to support therapeutic growth and healing. Horses offer a unique way to explore behavior modification, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and empathy in a safe, supportive environment. The insights gained through working with horses create lasting, memorable learning experiences that can be applied to daily life.

For a deeper experience, we offer Equine-Assisted Mindfulness Retreats, led by Cory Applegate, LMFT, and horsemanship expert Scot Hansen. Through somatic practices, movement, and meditation, participants engage in experiential exercises that build skills in mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. These retreats provide a space to disconnect from stress and technology while reconnecting with nature, horses, and each other.

Held at Flying Horseshoe Ranch in Cle Elum, Washington, just 90 minutes from Seattle, our glamping-style retreats offer a peaceful escape into the wild beauty of the Pacific Northwest. No prior horse experience is required, and while all activities are horse-centered, riding is optional.

Upcoming retreat dates will be announced soon!

How Horses Enhance Therapy

  • Expanded Relational Dynamics

In traditional talk therapy, the only relationship in the room is therapist and client. When a horse is present, there is another being to attend to, from which we can learn, model, and understand relationship dynamics like trust and nonverbal communication.

  • Experiential Learning

We don’t have to wait for situations to arise in our day to day lives for an opportunity to practice skills. Working with horses allows us to practice skills in the moment, allowing for immediate feedback, support, and processing.

  • Somatic Embodiment

Working with horses allows us to attend to the mind-body connection. Sessions with horses take place in a peaceful, outdoor environment, incorporating movement with the rest of our five senses.

The non-traditional setting of EAP can be especially helpful for folks who identify as neurodivergent, teens who are resistant to therapy, folks who feel burned out with traditional talk therapy, or anyone who could use some time with a nonjudgmental, furry friend.
